From a Meal to a Movement:
The Story of UP Initiative’s Fight for Dignity and Change.
UP Initiative was born in 2023 from a simple, powerful idea: people are people, all year long. Everyone deserves food, hygiene, and access to basic needs—no matter where they are on their journey.
What started as a small community effort in Berea, Kentucky has grown into a movement dedicated to nourishing bodies, fostering dignity, and building a compassionate, inclusive community.
Humble Beginnings
The first event was modest: a few burgers and hotdogs on a parking-lot grill. About six volunteers helped, and five neighbors joined. As more people came, the team hit the streets to deliver meals directly to those in need.
It quickly became clear: food alone wasn’t enough. Guests needed showers, clean clothing, laundry access, and a safe space to rest. UP Initiative began expanding services to meet the full spectrum of needs in the community.
Growth and Expansion
October 2023: Opened doors in an 800-square-foot space with a single metal shelf.
October 2024: Expanded to a 5,000-square-foot building on 2 acres, adding offices, a clothing closet, and dry food storage.
Partnerships have amplified impact:
Mountain Comprehensive Care Center – on-site behavioral health counseling
UK Target 4 Prevention Project – harm reduction education and supplies
Madison County Tenants Union – housing advocacy and community organizing
White House Clinic Mobile Clinic – medical care on-site
Kentucky River Foothills Kynector – benefits enrollment support
Funding from Madison County ASAP ensures ongoing access to harm reduction supplies, support for sober living and rehabilitation, and cleaning resources to keep the drop-in space safe and welcoming.
Our Philosophy
At the heart of UP Initiative is a simple principle: everyone is welcome, always.
Guests do not need identification, personal details, or even their real name—they just need to want to be here. Our low-barrier, nonjudgmental approach ensures neighbors can access meals, showers, laundry, clothing, and housing support without obstacles.
Every interaction is grounded in respect, trust, and dignity. Volunteers, partners, and neighbors come together to build a space that is safe, welcoming, and empowering.
Looking Forward
UP Initiative continues to evolve with a clear mission:
Expand visibility and awareness
Offer services seven days a week
Strengthen pathways to stability and opportunity for every neighbor
From a few burgers on a parking-lot grill to a full-scale drop-in center, UP Initiative has grown into a movement that uplifts individuals, strengthens community, and fosters a more compassionate Berea—one meal, one connection, and one act of care at a time.
